Non-Stress Test: 
A non-stress test is performed to help your doctor determine how your baby is doing before it is born. The test is done for several reasons including decreased fetal movement (baby movement), gestational diabetes, for mom's over 35 years of age, etc. An electronic fetal monitor is used to obtain a tracing of the baby's heart rate for 20-40 minutes while mom relaxes in a recliner. The baby's heart rate increases when he/she moves and shows the doctor the baby is doing well before birth. The non-stress test does not detect all problems and is just one of several tests your doctor may order.

Amniotic Fluid Index: 
An amniotic fluid index (or AFI) is a test done with an ultrasound machine and measures how much amniotic fluid is around the baby. This test is ordered by your doctor in the last several weeks of pregnancy to help determine that the baby is doing well before birth. AFI's are usually done with non-stress tests to provide the doctor with more information about your baby and pregnancy.

Colposcopy:
Colposcopy (utilizing a special microscope) is a special exam that allows your physician to look more closely at your cervix. Your doctor may do a colposcopy if you have had one of more abnormal pap test results. Colposcopy may also be done if you have pain or bleeding with sexual intercourse.
